I'm seeing a lot of feedback regarding the use of somatic questions:
- Where in your body do you feel that?
- What happens inside you as we talk about this?
- Etc
Even though EFT is not somatic therapy, it IS experiential. It's all about feeling it in the here and now.
When working with clients who are very cognitive (like myself), it's important to slow things down and really dive deep into the feelings happening in the present moment.
Use somatic questions. Stretch a 30 second line of questioning to 60 seconds. Use silence between questions when you say "let's sit with that for a moment."
If it doesn't feel slightly awkward, you're probably going too fast for EFT.
Phase 1: Deepen the feeling, stay with it in the here and now, use somatic questions as an entry point
Phase 2: Get to know the feeling, when did they first feel it? Is it a familiar feeling? What does the younger part of them need to know in moments when it comes up? This is more cognitive, but must come second to phase 1.
