## BIPOLAR I
- **Does not require depressive episode**
- Requires one **manic** episode (at east 7 days OR hospitalization of any duration)
- May have psychotic symptoms -(diagnosis of bipolar I with psychotic features)
- The symptoms cause marked impairment in social or occupational functioning
Usually leads with depression (even though it is not required for Bipolar I), and it can take YEARS for the manic episode to appear.
## BIPOLAR II
- **Requires depressive episode**
- Requires one **hypomanic** episode (at least 4 days)
- No hospitalization
- No psychotic symptoms
- No manic episode ever (or will be bipolar l)
- The symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other functioning
