Connect a moment from [[Strategic Family Therapy]] back to [[General systems theory]] via a creative moment such as a video clip, physical object, skit, etc.
## My presentation:
I will be connecting the concepts of [[First, second, and third order change]] from Systems Theory with the paradoxical interventions of Strategic Family Therapy
When steve jobs announced the first iPhone in 2007, he actually did it in a very creative way. Instead of coming out and announcing the phone right away, he did it in a very paradoxical way.
At first, he framed it as three seperate devices. A new iPod, a phone, and an internet communications device. On their own, each of these would have been first order changes.
A new ipod would have just been a first order change in the mp3 player space, a new basic phone would have just been a first order change in the smartphone space, and a new internet communicator would have just been a first order change in the world of PDAs
After pardoxically introducing these three devices and tricking the entire audience, he reveals that all these are actually just ONE devcie, which turned out to be a masisve second order change for all of us and the way we use technology every day.
## Script
Hi everyone! Today I’ll be showing you a video of a moment in tech history that impacted each and everyone one of us.
Before showing the video, I want to just spend a few minutes telling you what we’re going to watch and also do a little short activity.
If you don’t mind, can everyone pleas take out their phone and open up the settings for me.
The instructiosn might be a little different depending on if you have an iphone or android, but can you please find the screen time section for me and open that up.
Would anybody feel comfortable sharing what their average is?
So I think it’s safe to say that all of us would agree that the modern smartphone was a massive second order change in all of our lives.
Less than 20 years ago, none of us were spending this much time on our screens, but now, it’s become a central part of our day.
The video I’m going to show is when Steve Jobs first announced the iPhone in 2007, has anybody here seen this already?
So if you didn’t know, before the iPhone, smartphones did exist, but they were very different. We had phones like the blackberry which were mostly focused on texting and email.
When the iPhone came out, it totally changed the use-case of the phone. Music, watching videos, browsing the internet, it became everything device. A big second order change from the previous definitoon of smartphone.
But funny enough, when Steve jobs announced the phone, he did it in a very unusual way. I would argue he did it in a very paradoxical way.
Instead of coming out on stage and introducing the iphone, he actually introduced it has three smaller first order change devices, a new ipod, a new phone, and a new internet communicator,
On their own, all of these would have been just simple first order changes. The ipod already existed, so a new one would just be a better verison of what was alreayd there. A new phone by itself without any of theother capabilities would have also just been a ifrst order change
It wasn’t until he revealed that all these 3 devices were actually one device, did the audience realize how big of a deal it was, the second order change was surfaced.
