Learned from [[Satpal Singh]]. A great one for my list of [[Gurbani concepts, metaphors, and grammar]]. --- The four jugs are a Hindu philosophy. In Sikhi, it is never argued whether or not they are true. But Guru Sahib uses them as an analogy several times. They say, if you do believe in these jugs, then… etc.  The four jugs are: - sat - Thretha - Duwapar  - Kal  There is a certain amount of time each jug lasts for. Sat jug is 4x longer than kal jug. Thretha is 3x longer, duwapar is 2x longer.  These jugs all take place on earth. They are almost like seasons of humanity. The sun is the same. The stars are the same. But humanity changes. In sat jug, everything was great. There was no evil or wrong. There was no need for somebody to be an example.  Sat jug also has four legs. This is the other Hindu concept of the universe balancing on a mythical bull. In sat jug, everything is stable.  In Thretha jug, the bull only has three legs. This is when Raam came to show the way.  In duwapar jug, there are only two legs. This is when Krishna came.  Now, we are living in kal jug. The most unstable with only one leg. The age of darkness. In Sikh philopshy, we believe Guru Nanak Dev Jee came during kal jug to save us by giving us naam. The techniques from prior jugs (pilgrimages, sacrifices, etc are no longer relevant).  Kal jug is simply the age of maya. We are intoxicated by it. Without Guru, we are in kal jug (ek gharee na milithay thaa kal jug hothaa). With naam, we are able to be protected from kal jug. It’s like going to a liquor store. If you begin drinking the different options, you will become intoxicated by them. But if you aren’t tempted and don’t drink anything, it’s just another store that doesn’t mean anything to you. The same applies to the jugs. Just because we are in kal jug doesn’t mean we are any different than the previous jugs. Naam protects us. It helps us escape maya in today’s world. It is the most relevant technique.
