**Circular questions** usually involve a before and after element, or an event and reaction factor. A comparative question.
- Example:
- “When your daughter withdraws, how does your husband usually respond?”
- “Who tends to worry the most in your family when someone is upset?”
**Process questions** are part of [[Bowen Family Therapy]]. These are more reflective in nature and focused on the present moment. The goal is to promote thinking rather than reacting by focusing on what’s happening inside the system rather than content or events.
- Example:
- “What happens in you when your mother criticizes your choices?”
- “How do you usually respond when your brother avoids family gatherings?”
These are both great for my list of [[Therapist tips and tricks]].
