Lately, I’ve been reflecting on my reliance on Amazon and being a Kindle customer. The ecosystem works so well between buying books, delivering them to the Kindle wirelessly, and having frictionless integration with Goodreads to keep track of progress and completion.
But at what cost?
I’ve been thinking of switching to a service like StoryGraph to replace Goodreads, for example. However, I’m really struggling with the UI and amount of effort required to integrate it into my workload.
- It’s not directly connected to my Kindle
- I’d have to manually remember to keep it updated
- It’s library of books is not as extensive as Goodreads
But despite these downfalls, it’s run by a small independent team that is motivated to fight against the monopoly power of Amazon.
I love that.
Supporting small apps and businesses like this requires a certain level of sacrifice. Usually, in the form of comfort or convenience. See [[Sacrificing comfort]].
Yes, the experience is way easier on the Amazon ecosystem, but what’s more important, my morals or comfort?
But at the same time to play devil's advocate, if the discomfort causes so much friction that it stops us from doing the thing in the first place (e.g Storygraph might be too much friction that I just stop tracking my books all together), then maybe it's not worth it. It's a case by case thing.
