While listening to JapJi Sahib katha by [[Satpal Singh]] (Nanak Naam), I really found the point about sin to be fascinating. I’ve never heard it explained like this anywhere else before, which is why I’m adding it to my list of [[Gurbani concepts, metaphors, and grammar]].
He explains that M1 is telling us the only sin is not remembering Vaheguru. Our ignorance is the only sin.
In JapJi Sahib, the pangtee “Asankh papee paap kar jai” has an unkar under the word paap, which makes it singular. One sin. There are countless sinners committing the one sin (not many different sins).
Contrast this to the spelling of paap in the shabad [[ਹਮ ਡੋਲਤ ਬੇੜੀ ਪਾਪ ਭਰੀ ਹੈ ਪਵਣੁ ਲਗੈ ਮਤੁ ਜਾਈ ॥]] and we see it is referring to multiple sins.
